WEEK 5: Body Talk- Eisner's A Contract with God

Before reading A Contract with God, I totally judged it and thought it was going to be a book about religion or something. After reading the first chapter, my view of it totally changed. I really got into the novel. Emotionally invested and everything. It's always good to read something that's speaking about real things that happen in the world, in a genre of books you wouldn't think a writer you step out of bounds to express. For example, the man who gave up on God because he lost his daughter, the drunken wifey beating accountant with the passion to be a singer, the lonely mean landlord who committed suicide because he was accused of being a sex maniac and murderer, etc. The chapter that really spoke to me was the one where people had to go out to the country for the summer and this girl and guy were trying to put up a front on how they were rich and had money by spending a lot on transportation, just to be seen. The girl shut down the guy studying to be a doctor and fell for the guy who was pretending to have money. The guy raped her after he found out that they were in the same social class. He felt like since they're the same and she's a woman, he shouldn't give her any type of respect and that he has nothing to lose, so he might as well get something out of it. This one really spoke to me because it really happens a lot in the world and it gets ignored or brushed off. The victim a lot of times, is to blame because of choice of clothing, being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or something another stupid excuse to make it seem as it was her fault. It really made me feel bad because she said she felt worthless, etc. Women are made to think that their worth is based on their sexuality and a lot of other things and we are constantly judged on it. She felt like her life was over because nobody would want her because of how the guy did her dirty. I knew he was up to no good by the way he was drawn and came off at the beginning of the story, I thought they were gonna soon be married and he tells her the truth after or something along those lines. I'm glad the girl had someone who truly cared for her even after she shut him down. It's not a good way to find out people's truth's but sometime's God puts you in certain situations that will really open your eyes.
